Installing the Megascans Plugin for UE4
This installation manual is geared towards Windows OS. For Mac users, please visit this article.
Before proceeding with plugin installation, make sure that Unreal Engine is closed on your machine.
If you are setting up Bridge for the first time, you will be asked to select your DCC/ENGINE in the Settings pop-up as follows:
- Just choose Unreal Engine from the DCC/ENGINE drop-down and click Save Changes. Please note that this step does not install the Livelink in your Engine.
❗Note: the Local Library Path is the location where Bridge will create your asset library, i.e. your Megascans Library. When you click Save Changes above, the plugin will be downloaded in a folder called support, inside the assets library. This is NOT the path where your plugin will be installed.
- Next, download the asset you want to export to UE4. The Export Settings tab will only be visible after you download an asset to your hard drive first. You will then see the following settings:
- In Engine Version, select the version of Unreal Engine you want to install the plugin on.
- Now set the Installation Folder by clicking Select Folder, to where your engine's plugins are installed, which is usually: C:\Program Files\Epic Games\UE_4.2x\Engine\Plugins. The path should basically be where your engine's plugins are installed.
- Please ensure that you DO NOT specify Program Files (x86) in the above path. This will lead to a port error upon exporting, in which case you'll have to delete and re-install the Plugin.
- The Project Location is optional and you may leave it blank, as when you export the asset, UE4 will be running in parallel along with the Livelink, and the connection will automatically establish.
- If you do not want to leave it blank, you may specify the location where you want the Megascans content to be imported. This should be inside a project's Content folder.
Your Export Settings should now look something like this:
As soon as the Installation Folder is selected, Bridge begins the installation process and you'll see the Installing... message.
It is followed by a Installed Successfully message as shown below:
You can verify that the plugin was installed or not by going to the location specified in the Installation Folder and checking if the UnrealEnginePython folder exists there, for versions up to 4.23, and MegascansPlugin folder for v4.24.
Start Unreal Engine and you should see a green Megascans button inside, clicking which should open the plugin UI.
You should now be able to send assets from Bridge to Unreal Engine.
Deleting the Megascans Plugin for UE4
Close all instances of Unreal Engine and Bridge.
Now go to the plugins folder of your Epic Games directory:
<Your Epic Games directory>\UE_4.24\Engine\Plugins
Within the Plugins folder, locate the subfolder titled MegascansPlugin and delete it. Now the installed Livelink has been removed from Unreal Engine.
Then go to the plugins folder of your Megascans Library. If you do not remember where your Megascans Library is, go to Edit > Settings in Bridge. Your Settings window will show you the concerned directory, in the Local Library Path section.
Once in the MS Library, go to <Your MS Library directory>\support\plugins
Within the Plugins folder, locate the subfolder titled Unreal and delete it. Now the Livelink installation files have been removed as well. You can now proceed to re-install the Livelink following the steps given above.
