Blurred/low quality textures

Hi Grizzly, Are you using the 8K resolution texture? For your information, our assets are not "designed" for extreme macro shots. You can get pretty close with an 8K assets but not to that macro camera distance.

Here is a 100% crop on an 8K surface texture. You basically cannot go closer than that. This is just the albedo color map or commonly called "diffuse color".

EDIT: GIF compression to be taken into account. The texture is a lot sharper than in the GIF.

    Hi Jin,

Thanks for your quick response. I am using the 8k resolution file with all the available options as well. I rendered out the Mossy Stone Wall on a 200x200cm plane, but as you can see, my moss and the detail on rocks is a lot more "smushed"/clumped than in the Bridge preview. I'm rendering with Arnold on the highest settings for diffuse and 7 AA sampling, along with 6 or 7 for the other settings. In your gif, the quality is being preserved, but I'm not getting that. I'm just wondering what I can do in order to have the highest detail possible.

    Thanks again,

    Grizzly

(Bridge preview, edges on the rocks is defined)

Hi Grizzly, thank you for your additional information. I won't be able to provide Arnold support but I'll try to help a bit:

    • First, your Arnold settings are way too high. You should be able to render this in less than 10 minutes for sure.

    • Seems like you are not using a correct linear workflow. Make sure to:
Use 32 bit EXR displacement ---> with RAW/Linear option enabled in the file node. The JPG will result in a flatter displacement as it is in 8bit, which is not enough for full depth displacement calculation.
Set your Normal map as RAW/Linear as well. Other maps like bump, AO and roughness-glossiness too.

    • Make sure your Arnold displacement settings in the mesh attribute (your plane) are correctly set.

Give it a shot and let me know! Also, you can find here an Arnold community that you can join and get help from.

    Cheers

I've quickly made a scene. You should get a similar result as mine. I'm using, albedo color, bump, normal, displacement, glossiness (inverted in my case).

    Hey Jin,

Nice render, I hope mine will look like yours soon lol. Thanks for your advice and linking the Arnold Discord, those guys have helped out a bit already! So I redownloaded everything for the wall material as .exr and enabled the Raw setting for the nodes, and this, along with tweaking the displacement settings for the mesh, did give me a bit more depth. But unfortunately, I'm still getting major stretching, extreme lack of detail (looks straight out of Halo Reach), and lack of 3d-ness for each and every rock. As always, any help is greatly appreciated, and I'll keep you updated with whatever help I get from Discord as well.

    Happy New Year,

    Grizzly

    Hi,

I am having exactly the same issue as discussed here. Was there ever a solution to the issue I would love to know.

    Hey,

Nope. They guy helping me said that apparently the issue is not an issue with quixel and then stopped helping me. I had to cancel my subscription cause there was no point in using a service that wouldnt work and that they stopped helping me with. Hopefully your outcome is different, and if you find a solution please let me know!

  • The service isn't the issue here GrizzlyB - the problem is going to be in your rendering settings. Our assets are quality controlled - we don't offer anything that's blurry. If you're running into an issue with blurriness, it's most likely related to inexperience in working with the renderer you're using. You'll most likely find that any asset you bring in has the same problem, regardless of where that asset is sourced from.

We can assist you with problems in the assets themselves but we're not able to provide technical assistance for rendering - that sort of question should be directed toward Maya support groups (such as this one) as we can't troubleshoot software that we don't develop in-house.

Hello GrizzlyB you did not answer my latest message on Discord.

As Jonathan said, the issue is coming from a lack of knowledge about PBR rendering. I'm happy to help but you'll have to make some effort on your side as well! CGI is a very complex and super long-shot subject to deep-dive in. It requires years of experience and knowledge and extreme attention to the workflow / pipeline.

Please, answer me on Discord. I can always help you up to a certain limit. My help is mainly regarding how to use Arnold, not Quixel Megascans as the assets have no problem at all. 😉

    Looking forward to your message.

Jin Would you be able to help me troubleshoot this issue. it would be greatly appreciated if you could.

So the scene I have currently has a Plane which is 6400 Polys, AiSkyDome and an area light. The texture from Bridge is the Icelandic Rock Cliff and  has all files in 8k and EXR format. I Understand that this is not an issue with mega scans but your advice on the Arnold side would be great to have.

As stated from previous posts the issue i am having is that the image fidelity seems really low for 8k particularly when compared to the rendered images and preview in bridge. Also the displacement doesn't seem to work correctly, by that i mean that it is working but again not getting high enough fidelity on the displacement. displacement is not something i have done a lot of in the past. Also my MipMap bias is set to 0.

I have attached a screen grab of my sub div settings on the plane, the hypershade network, a close up render and a render at 1080p so you can see what i mean.

Again any help with trouble shooting this would be amazing and i apprecatie your time.

    Many Thanks.

    Hi all,

Thank you for responses. You guys are more than correct in your estimation of my knowledge of Arnold or lack thereof lol. But I have done a complete reinstall of both Maya and Bridge, meaning that Arnold is running on factory default settings, and the error is still occurring. I do understand that the scope of the issue is very large, but  I hope you understand that when the Bridge does not work with the literal default of Maya/Arnold, it is reasonable to assume that the issue lies with Bridge/the importer plugin, rather than Maya/Arnold.

I trust in your guys' expertise, however, and I'll continue to search for solutions and also become more educated on this issue. Also I Jin, I've been waiting for your response for 19 days ;). I hope this issue will get resolved as I love your service and assets, and would love to employ all of them.

    Thanks again for your time,

    Grizzly

Hello ! I'll try to show you how to do it on Arnold for Maya, that will be easier! I'll do it on Monday as it is the weekend.

    Cheers!

Dont show him. What about letting him learn the basics of PBR rendering first? People on her expect we do a complete setup of materials for them. I know what his issue is, but i wont tell it. Learn the basics of the renderer you use first before trying to apply hirez materials to it.

Although I do agree with you Thirddimension, there are things not easily accessible on the internet if not misleading as I saw many times.

GrizzlyB I've posted on Discord some tips. We will share this probably on a public blog post in the future so everyone can benefit from it.

Is the blog post shared and open to the public? If so, could you send a link to the blog post? Cant find it.
    Thanks
