I've got quite few programs with painting features in them and Quixel Mixer's painting is consistently in its own category for lag. The moment I start a stroke, everything slows to a crawl. I can't get almost any gesture or grace in the motions, no practical control over stroke weight, or even consistent control over when the stroke starts and stops. This stays true no matter how many layers I hide, even when viewing the mask layer itself or ALB channel to skip any lighting. I'm only working in 2048 resolution, which is well within reason. My best guess is that it can't handle its own spacing (drawing dots is almost smooth).
In addition to this, I somehow get halfway through painting an edge pattern only to have all but the most recent stroke vanish. When I undo, the old strokes come back... at like 20% opacity. I could retrace them painfully around the mesh I suppose but this isn't acceptable at all. No matter how far back I undo or redo, I can't get my strokes to reappear. So even if I put up with that ridiculous lag, I'll still be at high risk of losing everything anyway.
I'd previously posted this same frustration several months back when custom meshes had just been released. To have this feature still so impractical is a huge disappointment given the ground Mixer needs to cover to compete with Substance. Almost every time I've tried to use painting in Mixer, I've lost my work.
There should only be black and white strokes in this mask, nothing in between. I can't do anything to fix it short of redrawing with those slow painful strokes.
