So, I was running into the bug of Mixer freezing while saying "Calculating curvature for " "... 40%"
And while I found lots of posts related to this, no one mentioned a workaround or specific cause.
I've found that it occurs when Soft Mesh is enabled in a curvature mask on certain custom meshes. This will cause a large number of smart materials to instantly crash a project.
Hope this helps anyone googling for an answer to this issue.
Edit: Quixel support reached out and asked me to try importing the model as an OBJ instead of FBX. I was indeed using FBX, so I tried this and it worked for me.
